Vierzehnheiligen means ’14 saints’ in German, the 14 saints in question being the ‘Holy Helpers’ to whom the Roman Catholic faithful in need pray inside the pilgrimage church of the same name in Bavaria, southern Germany. There has been a chapel dedicated to the Vierzehnheiligen on this site, in a hamlet near Bad Staffelstein, since at least 1448. It was here, in 1445, that a shepherd saw the first of a series of visions instructing him to build a chapel-home for the 14.
